The world we all share is looking worse and worse each day. Pollutants are entering the ground and the water in unprecedented amounts, the food is being treated with all kinds of pesticides and other chemicals, many of which are not really suitable for regular consumption and we must not forget about genetic modification of food. On top of all that, the food just does not taste as good as it did 20 or even 10 years ago.
So what can you do to ensure your family eats healthy, organic and delicious food? Well, you grow it yourself and then you prepare it yourself.
Know what you are eating
The first reason why you will want to grow your own food is that you will know exactly what you are eating. Governments around the world are constantly introducing new legislation that is supposed to enable the consumers to know everything about the food they are buying. In reality, however, there are plenty of loopholes that allow food manufacturers to omit various things that they use to treat food and especially preserve it.
When you are growing your own food, you know everything that has gone into the process of getting that delicious tomato that you have on your plate or that you use to cook your own tomato sauce. It can be anything else, of course. We are just using tomatoes as an example. You know where it was grown, what was used to protect it and how it was treated after picking.
Make your family healthier
There are a number of ways in which growing and preparing your own food will make your family healthier. For one, there is the simple matter of growing food that will not be treated with all kinds of chemicals, many of which are much more harmful for children than they are for adults.
In addition to this, due to the fact that you will mostly be growing vegetables, herbs and fruit; after a while you will also increase the consumption of these food groups, all of which are very healthy. In short, thanks to your new farming hobby, your family will start eating healthier from a purely nutritional standpoint.
Finally, there is the whole “working the fields” thing where you will be spending time outside, doing physical work and getting as much exercise as you would if you worked out with no particular goal in sight other than working out.
Make the family more tightly-knit
Growing food and preparing food as a family has additional beneficial effects, one of which is that it brings the family together like very few things can. Everyone can pitch in, from the youngest to the oldest. There is a job for everyone and this can make for beautiful family atmosphere. Furthermore, this will help you teach your children about the importance of being green and taking care of the planet. Finally, there is also something very primal in working the land and growing food. It is just so human.
You don’t have to stop at food
If you decide to go homegrown and home-prepared, you do not have to stop at food. You can grow your own tea and make your own fruit and vegetable juice. If you wish, you can even start brewing your own beer. All you need to do is get some brewing supplies, purchase the ingredients from organic farmers (or even grow some ingredients yourself) and before you know it, you will enjoy a healthy, home-brewed beer.
It can also save you money
The final reason why you will want to start growing your own food and preparing it yourself is that you will save huge amounts of money. People who start doing all of this say that the savings are more than noticeable and that they cannot believe they spent so much money on food before.
In short, there is absolutely no reason why you wouldn’t start growing your own food.
