The 21st century has definitely become the age of plastic surgery. Rarely is there a celebrity that has not done any alteration to their physical appearance. When it comes to Hollywood and the fact that the stars are constantly in the spotlight, it is no wonder they have the need to always look flawless. Therefore, a little nip and tuck from time to time is in order. However, the real discussion should be made about the young celebrities and young people under 18 who are not famous, but have already gone under the knife.
How young is too young?
Teenagers are under a lot of influence from social media and they have started to look up to reality show stars, such as Kylie Jenner. She is the perfect example of a young person who had undergone a plastic surgery, and publicly bragged about it. However, Kylie is not the only example of a young woman to have had this type of procedure.
Doctors all over the world have said that many women in their early 20s, and younger, succumb to the urge for aesthetic procedure. I would say it is no wonder they choose to have these surgeries done, considering many of them, if not all, have grown up watching celebrities inject Botox, get fillers and implants. What is more concerning is that their parents are allowing them to go through with their wish. In order for a minor to be able to have this type of procedure, a parent must sign a consent saying he or she agrees to their child having an operation.
Many critics resent these actions and believe teenagers should not be allowed to undergo these procedures until their body has reached full development. Especially considering that in the US in 2014 there has been 224,079 patients between the ages of 13 and 19 who have undergone cosmetic procedures. Why should they be allowed to have their breast augmented before they are allowed to rent a car or drink?
Furthermore, the reason why they should be forbidden to have any cosmetic procedure before the age of 25 is that they cannot think rationally in teenage years. Peer pressure is enormous and they are prone to impulsive decisions, which is why their parents should have the crucial role in their development. A serious conversation may help a lot, alongside some research that a parent can show to them regarding many side effects and surgeries gone wrong. This may scare the kid and even change their mind at best.
When is actually the right time to reach for the cosmetic procedure?
The best year to start having any cosmetic procedure is in the person’s 20s. This is the recommended age for nose operations if an individual is not satisfied with their nose shape. Breast implants should not be implanted before the age of 25, because the body is still developing. Tummy tuck should be done after a woman turns 35 or when she has decided to stop having children. Facelift is best to do in the late 40s. The popular mini facelift produces a more youthful appearance, and is therefore best for women whose face skin has loosen, or for those who have the problem with “turkey-neck.”
Charles Kemp says
I think there are a number of plastic surgery cases that were for people younger than 18. Nowadays, there are a lot of people that are looking to fix problems earlier on than normal. I think that it would be really helpful to get it taken care of as a kid so that they don’t have problems down the road later on in life.
